Bitumen is a viscous substance that is blackish brown in colour and exists in a liquid to semi-solid phase. It is usually composed of asphaltene resin and other petroleum compounds. It is generally found in nature and can also be derived from crude oil. As you know, crude oil is a mixture of several compounds that are separated by a distillation tower. The remnants of the distillation tower called the vacuum bottom, are transferred to be processed and turned into bitumen.
